Studies by the Office of the Legislative Auditor and others have concluded that wine prices are higher in Minnesota than in other states because of our anti-competitive laws, which protect significant liquor monopoly profits at the expense of consumers. No wonder the liquor monopoly continues to fight the sale of wine in grocery stores so hard!

So far, the liquor monopoly has a strong hold on Minnesota because of claims that competition will put an end to independent and municipal liquor stores, and that Wine With Dinner will threaten public safety. But the facts prove otherwise:

* Grocery stores currently sell wine in 33 states, yet private liquor stores continue to thrive. Competition exists in nearly every other retail market because it's good for consumers. And currently, municipal on-sale liquor establishments compete with local bars and restaurants in the communities they serve.

* FBI and other key public safety statistics show there is no greater risk to public safety in states that allow wine in grocery stores compared to those that do not.

* Minnesota grocers live and pay taxes in local communities. They're not about to put youth and public safety at risk. Under grocers' watch, wine will be sold responsibly and safely.
